Linked Heating Systems

A linked heating system also known as link-up is one where multiple heat sources are combined.

Linked systems can be very flexible and can allow you to take advantage of seasonal differences in available power. For example a linked system allows you to use solar thermal panels in the warm months to provide hot water (when you do not need your heating on), but then switch over to a wood boiler stove to provide heating and hot water in the colder months when solar radiation is less.

A linked system is also ideal if you want to reduce your gas or oil consumption as it allows you to link in (for example) a wood boiler stove. When the wood boiler stove is going your gas/oil boiler will have less work to do and consequently you will use less gas/oil.

Using a Thermal store or Heat bank is an example of how this can be achieved.

How It Works

The basic principle behind both is that the ‘primary’ heating fluid is shared between all energy input sources and the cylinder content - It is thermal heat that is stored – as opposed to the consumable hot water. All heat inputs and

output emitters – radiators and underfloor circuits – all share the same ‘primary’ fluid - everything is connected directly to the cylinder – No coils = 100% heat exchange.

The difference between HEATBANK and THERMAL STORE is the method used to extract the heat from the store. You can find more information about Thermal stores by visiting

The h2 panel is another example of how this can be achieved.

How It Works

A solid fuel appliance is efficiently linked into a central heating system with an automatic boiler, enabling both to contribute energy to heat the hot water, radiators and even under floor heating.

Solid fuel appliances work more efficiently at lower temperatures, with the automatic boiler adding the extra energy to lift the temperature of the flow water serving the heating system and hot water recharge.

The panel controls the balance between the solid fuel and the automatic boilers ensuring that when the solid fuel appliance is fired up all the energy is efficiently distributed to the hot water and central heating system, only calling on the automatic boiler to top up when needed.

By using the solid fuel energy first allows full use of both boilers efficiently and does not waste any energy and is therefore more cost effective.

Boiler & Central Heating Installations

There are many considerations when installing a full central heating system. Book your free consultation, and we will visit your home and take you through the various options on offer, explaining features, benefits and costs of each. Our aim is to install an efficient system that meets your needs for many years to come, at a fair price, leaving you with a heating system that will neatly integrate into your property.

Upgrading your Central Heating

Quite often a full new system is overkill and your existing central heating system can be modified with new technologies, making it more efficient than ever before. Adding an A-Rated condensing boiler can make a huge difference to the efficiency and running costs of your system. Other options that can improve an old system include installation of newer radiators, magnetic system filters or fitting thermostatic radiator valves.

To keep your system in full working order we offer annual boiler services. This offers peace of mind that your system is kept safe from dangerous leaks and is running at its best. As with your car, household appliances, or any hard working machine, a regularly serviced boiler and central heating system will normally last much longer than one that is not looked after. An initial Boiler service costs £70 and each year after it will cost just £50.

Underfloor Heating

Under floor heating in most forms is inexpensive to install, economical to run, there is no maintenance and above all the heat distribution is total. It is invisible in so much as there are no radiators or heated towel rails showing. It can be installed under almost every floor type, wood, tile and laminate making it ideal for refurbishment projects. This kind of heating can be applied in bathrooms, shower rooms and wet areas, conservatories and sunrooms, kitchens and utility rooms. It can be applied to tiled and stone floors and laminate and solid wood floors.

The system is controlled by the floor temperature sensor and wall mounted electronic thermostat. This prevents the floor from overheating. The most comfortable surface temperature will be 22°C. This is easily adjusted (and can be increased if required) by turning the dial on the thermostat.

Powerflushing cleans the system using water at high velocity but at low pressure so that there is no damage caused to the system. Cleansing chemicals are also added whilst flushing to add to the effectiveness.

The Powerflush cures problems with circulation in the system as the sludge causes blockages which prevent parts of the system getting hot. The Powerflush can also cure boiler noise problems.

If installing a new boiler on an existing system it is advised to have a Powerflush as it will prevent any future problems occurring, if any debris gathers in the boilers heat exchanger it can cause noisy operation, reduce the boilers efficiency or worst case cause the boiler to breakdown and most manufacturers warranty is void.

We use the Kamco CF 90 Quantum power flushing pump acknowledged as the best in its field.

Solid Fuel & Chimney Lining

Ash Heating Systems can provide a complete installation for your new stove, solid fuel, wood burning or gas. We carry out all aspects of the job from knocking out old fires, forming new openings, exposing and repairing existing stone lintels which has been covered over. Installing new stone lintels, laying hearths, rendering, plastering and brick work, It may even be that your chimney stack has being taken down, no problem we can re build it – whatever you are looking for. (see gallery for examples of some of our work)

We work closely alongside our local stonemason Whittaker brothers who supplies most of our stone for jobs. If you would like to learn more about Whittaker Brothers and the work they do, then please visit their website

All stove installations come with register plate, carbon monoxide smoke detector, stove thermometer and full HETAS certification as required by law.

Most stove installations will require your chimney to be lined, particularly houses which have previously been used for open coal fires, as they are likely to be porous, leaky or breached. This can affect the pull of the chimney and emit smoke, dangerous fumes, carbon monoxide and other products of combustion into your property. Breached brickwork and previous inappropriate building alterations can also allow flames and raw heat near combustible materials, all leading to possible disastrous and fatal consequences.

Ash Heating Systems will come and give you a comprehensive assessment of your chimney including smoke testing before any installation is carried out with us.

All of our chimneys are lined using 904/904 flexible flue liners which means it is Made of 904 grade Stainless steel inner and 904 outer (Triple Lock) and comes with a 25 year guarantee.

Additonally, If you are located in a smoke control area you will need a special type of DEFRA approved woodburning stove, this useful link will help with this

Woodburning and multifuel stoves can only be fitted and legally certificated by fully qualified, trained and registered HETAS installers. Each installation should conform to national and local Building Regulations and also comply with Health and Safety and Fire Safety requirements. Installation by a non qualified person is a breach of UK Law and will result in your home insurance being void.

Renewable Energy

Solar Water Heating

The most cost effective, affordable renewable energy technology currently available for domestic and commercial properties is Solar Thermal Water Heating. Solar thermal panels can provide up to 60% of your hot water and assist heating by transforming direct and diffused sunlight into useful heat.

How Does It Work?

A solar energy system absorbs, retains, transfers and stores the sun's energy. The system requires a collector (solar panel), a controller, a pump and a store (hot water cylinder). The controller turns on a circulating pump to transfer heat from the collector to the storage cylinder.

For maximum efficiency, solar panels should be mounted on a south facing roof at an angle of 30 - 50˚.

The Benefits Of Solar Water Heating

  • Hot water throughout the year: the system works all year round, though you’ll need to heat the water further with a boiler or immersion heater during the winter months.
  • Cut your bills: sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your hot water costs will be reduced.
  • As well as lowering your fuel bills, the UK Government have launched the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme to support the uptake of renewable heat technologies through the provision of financial incentives. The RHI tariff for Solar Thermal is 19.2p per p/kWh renewable heat.
  • Cut your carbon footprint: solar hot water is a green, renewable heating system and can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions

Is Solar Water Heating System Suitable For My Home?

To tell if solar water heating is right for you, there are a few key questions to consider:

  • Do you have a sunny place to put solar panels?
You’ll need around 5 square metres of roof space which faces east to west through south and receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day. Alternatively, if you do not have a south facing roof and if you have space, you could install two panels, one facing east and one facing west – but this will make installation more costly. The panels don’t always have to be mounted on a roof; they can be fixed to a frame on flat roofs.
  • Do you have space for a larger, or an extra, hot water cylinder?
If a dedicated solar cylinder is not already installed then you will need to replace the existing cylinder, or add a dedicated cylinder with a solar heating coil.
  • Is your current boiler compatible with solar water heating?
Most conventional boiler and hot water cylinder systems are compatible with solar water heating. If your boiler is a combination boiler (combi) and you don’t currently have a hot water tank then a solar hot water system may not be compatible.
  • Do you need planning permission?
In England most solar water heating systems don’t need planning permission, but it is always best to consult your local planning office if you live in a Listed Building, or a building in Conservation Area or World Heritage Site.

Repairs & Servicing

Boiler Services

To keep your system in full working order we offer annual boiler services. This offers peace of mind that your system is kept safe from dangerous leaks and is running at its best. Landlord Certificates

Are you a landlord?

Landlords must be able to provide their tenants with an up-to-date Gas Safety record, by law, landlords must have all gas appliances serviced regularly, normally once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

You will be provided with a Gas Safety record upon completion of the check – see sample of landlord certificate.

Do you live in a rented property?

Did you know that your landlord has legal responsibilities when it comes to gas safety?

If you rent a property, ask your landlord for a copy of the current Gas Safety record. This record shows that gas appliances have had an annual gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Landlords must also maintain gas appliances, so check the date when yours were last serviced as well.
